10 Things that Scare the Crap Out of Me, In Honor of Hallowe'en.

1. Walking up stairs in which I can see through. I do not need to know how far away I am from the ground.

2. Children in horror movies. Seriously, there's nothing like watching a cute little demonic child terrorize a sleepy mountain town that doesn't make you rethink your plans for becoming a foster parent, or even a biological parent.

3. Turning into a zombie. Seriously, if I get bit, just lob my head off. Don't be a pussy about it, just do it.

4. Unfinished basements. I don't care what you say, but if your basement only has a cement floor and a swinging lightbulb, you are hiding something from me, and no, I will not go downstairs and fetch something out of the freezer for you.

5. Moving into a home that has a mean ghost. I have lived with some weird dead people before, but all of them have been very nice from what I experienced.  I do not ever want to live with a spirit that is an asshole.

6. Not only am I terrified of experiencing my own death, but I am really afraid of dying and not having my body found until it is all gross and bloated and eaten by birds and rodents.

7. Aliens. I believe they are out there, and I would really appreciate it if they never, ever set foot in my bedroom at night to take me away and do tests on me. Thanks in advance, space people.

8.  Happening upon a dead body while walking in the woods.

9. Showering at night, in a bathroom that doesn't have a locking door. I'm looking at you, hostels and campgrounds.

10. Being the slowest runner in the group.

15 Things That Made Me Happy Today

1. The warm temperature and the sunshine.

2. Being invited out to karaoke by a new work friend.

3. Kissing my husband.

4. Watching Smyrish "churn" his own butter.

5.  Playing "Deal or No Deal" on Facebook.

6. Sitting outside with one of my clients watching airplanes fly by.

7. Watching Patches and Maggie wrestle on the slippery linoleum floor.

8. Egg salad sandwiches.

9. Having a flashlight to use, so I felt safe walking at night.

10. I can breathe out of one nostril.

11. I have lost 5 pounds.

12. The smell of campfire permeating the neighborhood.

13. The amazing Halloween decorations around these parts.

14. Having a "back up" travel mug to use for my coffee.

15. Reminiscing about Casey and Finnegan and Mr. Dressup.

32 Things I've Learned in my 32 Years

Yesterday I turned thirty-two. Getting older usually doesn't bother me, but this year, the thought of being thirty-two turned my stomach a wee bit. Thirty-two is not old by any means, but it has sunk in that I am not nineteen anymore, and even though I have more than enough time to still do everything I want to do in life ( if I don't get hit by a bus or have a fatal brain aneurysm or anything), I don't really have the time to lollygag anymore...some decisions need to be made, and some things just need to get done, and some things just are the way they are. I haven't learned much, but I've tried, and here is a list of things I believe to be true.

1. Go ahead and lie, cheat and steal if it suits you.  Just be okay with the fact that you are going to get caught, and have a plan for when you do.

2. You cannot die of a broken heart.

3. There is no better feeling than someone making you laugh til you cry.

4. It is impossible to eat healthy when you only have $15.00 left after you cash your paycheck and pay the bills.

5. The tall skinny blonde sitting next to you, probably has just as many issues with her body and self esteem as the short, fat person on the other side of you.

6. Girls are way dirtier than boys.

7. True friends will tell you that you are being an asshole when you are, and expect you to keep them in line too.

8. Don't regret anything. What's done is done, and there was a reason why you did it.

9. Nobody owes you anything, so don't expect anything.

10. If you are going to sink a canoe in the middle of a lake, empty it of its contents first.

11. Dancing with your friends can make almost anything better.

12. Don't play board games with Bree or Nick, unless you are prepared for the consequences. ;)

13. If you're confused in an airport, train station, or bus station the haggard guy with all the patches on his back pack knows more than the staff that are paid to be there.

14. Don't use gasoline to start a fire if the pit is close to the house.

15. Don't leave your clothes on the beach when you go skinny dipping. Always take something into the water with you, just in case.

16. Always have some hand signals worked out before you hook the GT Racer up to the back of your vehicle and whip your cousin around on it.

17. Don't wear flip flops to a concert, unless you're okay with standing in the back, or losing a toenail or two.

18. Wear comfortable underwear. Picking a thong out of your arse all day does not make you look sexy.

19. You are never too old or too young to have fun adventures.

20. Unless they were awful to you, it's a good idea to be friends with your ex.

21. Being poor sucks. Having money really does make you happier.

22. Take good care of your teeth.

23. No matter how hard you try not to, you do turn into your parents in some shape or form.

24. When peeing outside, always make sure that you are at the top of the downward slant.

25. You will most likely get away with driving home drunk if the people in the car are way drunker than you are, and you stick your belly out and pretend that you are pregnant and physically uncomfortable. Roll your eyes at the cop to show your disdain for your friends/family/boyfriend.

26. Nobody ever gets rid of photos that you ask them to.

27. If you are leaving on vacation, don't leave leftover fish in your fridge.

28. Cats aren't super fond of swimming.

29. A savings account is good to have so you can move your last $40.00 to it from your chequing account so it doesn't get wasted on those darn NSF's.

30. If you pluck that hair, it will come back darker and thicker, and it will bring some friends.

31. It is better to be dressed for the weather than dressed to look cool.

32. No matter what happens in your life, you can and will get through it...... eventually.

Happy Blogoversary To Me!

Sunday was my 6th annual blogoversary. To celebrate this wondrous occasion, I compiled a list of things you may or may not know about moi, or my blog, and then I went to Dougal's wake, got really drunk, and forgot to post it.

1. I first started making money off sewing when I was 15. I created a really cool patchwork floppy toque, and all the snowboarders in town went wild for them. Most of the boys in my grade bought one off me for $20.00 a piece. I wish I still had mine to show you.

2. The number of comments on blog posts that I get, has drastically decreased since I am no longer single, and have less depressing, or sordid things to write about. (Not that being single is a bad thing, it is just sometimes more interesting.) However, I am very happy that my life is no longer in a constant state of depression and chaos.

3. If I don't eat eggs in the morning, I feel like crap for the rest of the day. Since I rarely take time for breakfast, most days I feel like a big pile of shit.

4. My favorite thing to do with my dad, was go for a Sunday drive all over hells half acre, snooping through old abandoned farm houses and then checking out all the cars that were for sale in the area.

5. I have written my name in a closet of every place I have ever lived or worked, or spent any amount of time in that I deemed special. All "entries" are dated.

6. I know I am playing too much online Scrabble when I am dreaming about words and anagrams.

7. I have been to over 30 funerals. Actually, I stopped counting at 30, because goddamn, that's a depressing thing to keep track of.

8. If I could do whatever I wanted in life, I would live in a lake front cottage year round, work from home, fish and swim everyday and have Stella Artois always on hand.

9. All I want for Christmas is a maid.

10. The three most popular posts since I started have been "Just Girl Stuff" , "The Recent Adventures of Abigail, Part Two" and "90 Days" .

11. I do not believe in divorce, unless there is something absolutely tragic and abusive going on. That is why I never thought I would get married. I never wanted to put myself in a position where I would have to legally break-up with someone, over something trivial that just drove me nuts. Luckily, my husband feels the same way.

12. I put garlic and dill into almost anything I cook.

13. I can only fall asleep on the cool side of the pillow.

14. Even though I took French throughout elementary and high school, I only know a handful of words, and maybe 2 or 3 phrases.

15. There is a blizzard on my birthday every single year, and it is never warmer that -35C. Luckily, this year, I'll be in Cuba. With my luck, it'll snow.

16. I brush my teeth, or rinse with mouthwash, every single time I go to the bathroom.

17. I used to be addicted to flossing my teeth, but now I usually forget to do it.

18. There are so many things I would like to tell the readers of my blog, but because of some of the people who read it, I can't.

19. My favorite pizza is the steak and mushroom melt from Panago.

20. My favorite scents are vanilla, the air after a summer rain, dill and the smell of a boat starting up.

21. I would guess that 60% of each day I live, is dedicated to cleaning up feces between home and work.

22. I really hate pointy toed shoes. Maybe because they look ridiculous on me.

23. Although I am jealous of their weekends off, EDO's, holidays, etc., I could never in a million years work in an office. I like not having scheduled breaks, and the option to be outside whenever I want, and rarely do I have to be up in the morning.

24. I have always had a strange fashion sense. My mom has some funny stories about the outfits I used to pick out as a kid. I still stand by my decisions.

25. The age of twenty-five was so horrible for me, that I wouldn't wish twenty-five upon my worst enemy.

26. One of the worst books I have ever read was "a-A Novel" by Andy Warhol.

27. I am totally "Team Jacob". I understand why she liked Edward in the first place, but c'mon, by the second book, us adults should know in our hearts that he's trouble, and just likes her, because he can control her. I've been there. So fuck you Edward, and your shiny skin.

28. I cannot go to bed, without a glass of water at my side.

29. I really, truly hate the fact that everyone in the world is so addicted to their cell phones, IPhone, Blackberry's, etc. Put down your gadget, and pay attention to the world around you once in a while, it's a pretty neat place.

30. Cream of mushroom soup, is only good with a pile of crackers, and a pinch of pepper.

31. I love Micheal Jackson. He makes my booty shake like nobodies business.

32. I think New Year's Eve is highly over-rated.

33. If I could go back to any place I have ever travelled, I would choose Churchill, Manitoba, Scotland and Venice Beach.

34. Before I'm dead and gone, I want to travel to Costa Rica, Mexico, Australia, Spain and New York City.

35. I am really bad at keeping in touch with people.

36. My number one guilty pleasure would have to be reading trashy tabloid magazines.

37. Malls scare me.

38. I hate watching myself on video. I always look and sound like a freakin' idiot.

39. In a huge percentage of photos ever taken of me, I am sticking out my tongue. I can't help it though, if I see a camera pointed in my direction, it just happens. However, after looking at photos from my wedding, I can see that it is hereditary. Most of my cousins on my mom's side do the same thing.

40. Although I love my blog, and love writing in general, life just gets in the way sometimes, and I don't post regularly, or write fluff posts just to fill the space. I have promised myself, that 2010 will be a "good writing year".

Grace in Small Things #27

1. I found homemade beet borscht from my aunt in my freezer.

2. Eating that borscht for 3 meals in 1 day, was super awesome and fantastic.

3. It was so good in fact, that I thought I would make my own in the slow cooker.

4. I ate the last of my aunt's borscht at work tonight.

5. I came home at midnight, and was overjoyed that my borscht in the slow cooker, smelled the same as hers. Although I did put too much cabbage in mine.

6. I cannot stop farting. The smell is intense. A part of me wishes that someone were here to smell this rancid borscht gas. Someone that would think it was funny of course, not someone that would be disgusted and lecture me on my cabbage consumption.

7. But, I am alone, late at night, farting on my yoga ball while playing online Scrabble, and I am quite enjoying myself.

8. I can't wait to taste my borscht tomorrow!

2. New material, and the ideas that come with it.

3. Bacardi Breezers left over from Saturday.

6. Reconnecting with a friend on Saturday.

7. Owning our own BBQ.

Grace in Small Things #23

1. Good-bye kisses when I leave for work, and the fact that when I just say "More!", I get more kisses. I could do it a bazillion times over, and get a kiss every time.

2. Getting to use work time, to visit friends and family ....and having them be super friendly and comfortable with my buddy from the group home....even when she yelled out "Abigail, I wiped my bum in the bathroom!" really loudly so everyone could hear. :)

3. Smyrish said he liked my hair. That compliment made my day, even though I didn't really show it at the time. I was hoping that he did.

4. Having a banker help me find money, instead of just taking it away.

5. Owning proper mannequins to display clothes on for the summer festivals.

6. Although the thunderstorm I was excited about this afternoon was sub-par, at least it didn't snow.

May 2, 2009

Grace in Small Things #21

1. My new hair extensions look amazing, and by tonight, thy will be done. I feel pretty.

2. There is beer in my fridge. It is almost cold.

3. I only have to wait 3 more hours for human contact and conversation.

4. I don't know if she knows it yet, but Pixx Axe is getting shitfaced with me tonight, since no one else is, and we're gonna have fun dammit!

5. I went to Kronau today for the first time, for no reason at all, except to drive around, have a cigarette and kill time before my shift ended.

6. I got some sweet lovin' twice yesterday. Huzzah!

Apr 29, 2009

Grace in Small Things #20

1. Being the supper guinea pig, and getting to test out Smyrish's new lentil/rice/turkey bacon creation. YUMMY!

2. Heading out to The Pub after supper, and seeing the smiling faces of my lovely lady friends, and the Palinode.

3. Hanging with Schmutzie. We always stay out way too late, and drink way too much, and have a great time doing what we do.

4. Listening to my brother talk about his new girlfriend, and how wonderful she is, and how happy he is when he's with her. He made me think that maybe its okay that he is dating my sister-in-law, which in turn, makes him my brother-in-law.

5. Coming home to Smyrish with a bag of Burger King, and laying on the couch together to watch The Wonder Years.

6. Learning that while I was out at The Pub, Smyrish took in my new bicycle with the blown tire, and brought home a whole new bike, tires intact.

Life is good right now.

Grace in Small Things #17

1. I had a really good time last night with the ladies. I also learned that I really like grapes dipped in chocolate fondue.

2. I had the worst sleep ever last night, but at least that means I should sleep well tonight.

3. I am almost ready for Smyrish's birthday party tomorrow, and am super excited to go Mini-Golfing!

4. I cleaned out my closet yesterday, and purged all the clothes I don't wear.... so today I went shopping and started filling it up again. With summer clothes. Huzzah!

5. The Juno's are on tonight. It's the only awards show I watch....I loves me some Canadian music.

25 Albums - Part Deux

6. Vauxhall and I - Morrissey

At a family reunion one summer, my cousin made me come and listen to this Morrissey album with him. I had listened to The Smiths a bit, but had never heard any of Morrissey's solo work. ( Remember, in the early 90's, I was still fairly young!)

I was hooked. Since then, Morrissey has been a staple in my life, especially when I am feeling down. Anyone who has dated me knows, that if they walk into my house, and I'm laying on the bed listening to a Morrissey album, there is something wrong with me in the head.

7. Add It Up - The Violent Femmes

I didn't realize it until just now, but the same cousin as mentioned above, got me hooked on the Violent Femmes. I love "Add it Up", well, because it's a compilation of "hits". From the second you hit play, you know you're in for a punk rock/rockabilly/gospel/pop music roller coaster ride of fun.

8. Nevermind - Nirvana

I know, it sounds cliche. Didn't this album "just totally change the lives" (sarcasm) of everyone in my age group? Well, let's me honest. It did, to many. Unlike many other grunge bands that I was into back in the day, when I hear Nevermind, or any Nirvana album, I still get excited. It was nice to be an angst ridden teenager, and have someone out there with power and fame, that felt just the same way as I did.

Kurt Cobain would have been 42 this year. His birthday is over now, but for all you die-hard fans out there who celebrate his birthday, you may want to check out this link, just for kicks : http://www.ehow.com/how_13459_celebrate-kurt-cobains.html

9. Phantom Power - The Tragically Hip

This album came out the summer that I ran away from home, to Vancouver. Every time I hear a song from it, I get a sick feeling at first....remembering how badly I scared and pissed off family and friends.

But, I still have it in heavy rotation after all these years. Gord Downie let the other members of the band write songs for this album, and I think that what makes it so different from some of the other Hip albums. All the songs are beautifully written, and tell stories that are uniquely Canadian.

On a side note, when I was walking down the train tracks in Thompson, Manitoba a few years back, with Mr. Henry, I couldn't help but start humming "Thompson Girl". now that song will forever be ingrained in my memory. Thanks, Das Hips.

10. Mellow Gold - Beck

I'll never forget it. One day, a bunch of us went to a friends house to chill out at lunch time. We were hanging out in her basement, when the video for "Loser" came on. It was brand spankin' new at the time, and I had never seen it, being stuck with Farm TV, and all.

My girlfriends who had seen it already, started complaining about how stupid it was, and what horrible music, and going on about "oh-my-god-he-dresses-so-weird", and so on.

Meanwhile, I was on my knees in front of the television, thinking " Oh my god, there's someone else in the world that dresses as weird as I do." And I totally dug the music.

It wasn't long after that, that I had a fall-out with the popular girls I had known and been friends with since kindergarten, and my life was never the same.

And I thank Beck for that.

Grace in Small Things #16

1. Although he broke the coffee pot, his heart was in the right place. I still ended up with morning coffee, thanks to his creativity, and didn't have to clean up the mess. Thanks honey!

2. New material from Value Village in Prince Albert. It's going to make some nice purses!

3. Nutcase101 bought one of my favorite items. Thanks!

4. It is nice enough outside, that I can just go for a walk, instead of having to drag my butt to the gym.

5. The house isn't as dirty as I make it out to be in my head. If I just spend tomorrow morning cleaning, it should hopefully stay that way until Saturday when company comes, and the ladies come over for the Sex Toy Party.

6. I am not as stressed about having to go back to work on Thursday, as I was last Friday. Finally, I am enjoying my 6 days off....now that there is only 2 to go.

7. Patches original owners were ever so nice, and babysat while we were out of town. They are even going to drop him off today for me.

8. It is St. Paddy's Day! Even though I may not go out, I hope that all of my friends have a drunken good time.

Mar 6, 2009

Grace in Small Things #14

1. Because I never bothered to use the Luiggi's gift certificate's I received a couple years ago, after I found a rusty screw in my pasta, I don't have to make supper tonight. I'm still a tad weary about eating there, but the chance to go for supper with Smyrish trumps my fear of finding foreign objects in my entree.

2. Paying the lady at the laundromat to wash, dry and fold our insanely large pile of dirty laundry was the best idea we've ever had. I would have had to spend most of the day at the laundromat if we didn't, and wouldn't have had time to enjoy my day off. Totally worth the money!

3. Finally had time to start taking photos of jewelery I've made this winter for my Etsy shop.

4. Having a TV that can tape shows for me, has freed up some time in my life as well. Hangover Sunday will be all about watching the shows I missed this week.

5. When we got our new cable package, Smyrish had the fore-thought to get us SexTV. Thanks honey! Now I have something to do on Friday nights!

Grace in Small Things #11

It is days like today, when I find it really hard to think of the little things that are making today okay. Today is a day of exhaustion, depression, paranoia, laziness, cramps and extreme loneliness, and my only hope is that the wine kicks in soon, and I forget all about everything and everyone.

1. Patches. This dog is the cat's pajamas, and he is way more lovable than the evil fish, although I do really enjoy their insanity. It is quite entertaining.

2. An out of the blue email from a friend I see only on occasion and by accident it seems these days, that said only "I love you Abigail. I really do."

3. Smyrish taking the dog for a walk this afternoon, because even though I wanted to get out of the house, I had just woken up after my last night shift, and felt like a zombie.

4. My brother is leaving The Pub, and his friends, to come and play Super Scrabble with Smyrish and I.

5. He is the only person that asked to hang out with me this weekend and I predict some good conversation tonight...as well as many drinks.

6. After looking at pictures from karaoke on Monday, I just couldn't help but giggle. It was a really good time.

7. I have half a box of red wine, and a bottle of white wine leftover from Christmas parties. Since I have no money, and the urge to drink, this made my day!

8. My old friend Jen. She sat and talked with me for an hour last night when I got to work. I love her stories and living vicariously through her crazy single life!

9. I have taken time each day this week to do something crafty and creative and my brain is ever so thankful.

Feb 9, 2009

Grace in Small Things #10

1. CBC Radio Two Morning.

2. Friends who truly understand what a night shift does to you.

3. Plans of eating greasy food and gossiping with your best friend later in the week.

4. Actually finding someone you want to get to know again on Facebook, and learning that they missed you too.

5. The book "Stuff White People Like".

6. A dog who uses a soaker pad to pee on.

7. A mom who has old piano sheet music and books you can have.

8. Brand new babies sprouting on the family tree.

9. Having an awesome mother-in-law.

10. Knowing that it is only one more sleep until pay day.

Jan 30, 2009

Grace in Small Things # 8

1. Random hot hippie guy chatted me up, told me I was cute, and asked for my phone number while I was pumping gas.

2. I had to tell him no, obviously, but I smiled and giggled about how I "still had it" for the rest of the day.

3. Did I mention I hadn't combed my hair, and was in my sweat pants?

4. I got to come home later that night, and cuddle up to Smyrish.

5. I told him about the hippie guy trying to pick me up, and he threatened to find him and beat him up.

6. Which made me feel super loved, and hot.

Jan 17, 2009

Grace in Small Things #6

1. Even though I stayed up way too late for no reason, I feel rested today.

2. I think it helped that I got to hang out with Schmutzie and Pocket Buddha for a few minutes before I went to bed.

3. My brain is feeling creative, and I just might hit the craft store today.

4. I don't have to work today, or tomorrow. You "working-for-the-weekend" types may not understand why this is so wonderful, because you always get weekends off. I do not, and am grateful when I do.

5. Instructables is awesome, and just killed half of my morning.

6. There isn't much housework to do today. Phew!

7. I have lost another 4 pounds. So that totals 10 lost pounds in a month. Not that you can tell, but whatever.

8. Smyrish moved the cardboard out of the hallway.

9. It is not -50C today. At this moment, it is a summery -8C, and I am told it will warm up even more. Who wants to hit the beach?

10. My moccasins are my new best friend. Thank you, Knuckle Toes!

25 Things About Abigail Road

The lovely Saviabella tagged me to do this over on Facebook, and I thought, "Well heck, I'll just blog it." This was a few days ago, and I have finally just finished the list. My brain could only handle writing a couple sentences a day this week.

I've done so many of these lists over the years, I'm not really sure what else there is to tell you about me. But, I am willing to give it a shot, and hopefully I won't repeat myself too much.

1. I'm not a neat freak by any means, but I have a huge issue with clutter. I can't concentrate on anything else, until the area that I'm sitting in is tidied up.

2. This means that sometimes, I don't get anything fun accomplished, because I'm too busy worrying about dirty dishes, or paper on the floor.

3. I wish that I had this problem in my car...like I wouldn't be able to drive it, until it was clean. My car is a disgusting mess.

4. I have decided, that I want to have Smyrish's babies.

5. Some of you may recall, that a couple years ago, I said I didn't want to have babies at all. I thought they would ruin my carefree lifestyle. I still think that, but I'm okay with it. I think we can work it out.

6. I now own more kitchen appliances than I have pairs of pants.

7. I hate pants. When you're fat, pants just never feel right.

8. If my life depended on it, I could not keep a plant alive.

9. After watching "The Happening" I had to wonder if one day all of my sick plants would band together and kill me. I wouldn't blame them one bit.

10. I am a word nerd. I take pleasure in sitting and reading the dictionary. It is my favorite book. When I was a kid, I'd take my parents monster encyclopedic dictionary to bed with me to read.

11. I have memorized all the 2 and 3 letter words in Scrabble. I am working on memorizing all the "Q" and "Z" words in the Scrabble dictionary.

12. I have a huge problem with using the Scrabble dictionary during play, for anything other than challenging an opponents word. It is cheating, and takes way too long to complete a game.

13. Because of this, I cannot play Scrabble with some of my friends, and if I do, I have to bite my tongue.

14. There is a note, and I don't know what note, that singers hit, that makes me cry the second I hear it. Maybe it is the emotion in their pitch.

15. If I am alone in my car, I just let the tears buck. Taylor Swift got me yesterday, and this past weekend, Cat Stevens hit it, and I could hardly see the road through my tears.

16. If I hear it, and I am in the company of others, I have to work my ass off to keep myself together. Not everyone can hit that note, whatever it is.

17. I wish I could hit that note.

18. Although, I might feel like a douche bag if I made people cry with the sound of my voice.

19. If I wear a grey shirt, I will sweat through it in no time. I don't know what it is about the color grey that makes my armpits leak so much.

20. Because of this, I avoid wearing grey, and stick to other colors that don't make me sweat. ( Note: I have no idea why grey makes me sweat, it just does.)

21. Thanks to years of being in band, and waitressing, I absolutely despise black dress pants and white shirts. They can suck it, far as I'm concerned.

22. I don't really like the word "rhythm" I don't like the way it is spelled, nor how it looks when written out or typed. I just realized that this morning, after I read a friend's status update on Facebook, which included the aforementioned word.

23. I do however wish I had more rhythm.
